Claim basics
Hit-and-run claim steps
A hit-and-run can make people feel stuck because the other driver is gone. The practical move is to document what is known and preserve details while they are fresh.
Call law enforcement if needed, preserve photos and witness details, look for camera locations, record the exact time and location, and ask your insurer what hit-and-run or uninsured motorist documents they require.
Document what is still there
- Vehicle damage, debris, road marks, traffic signs, nearby businesses, intersections, and cameras.
- Any plate digits, vehicle color, direction of travel, driver description, or witness notes.
- Police report or incident number if a report is made.
- Medical symptoms and treatment visits if anyone was hurt.
Ask about coverage
Your carrier may ask for a police report, signed statement, photos, or repair estimate. Ask what specific documents they need and where to upload them.
Keep a timeline
Write down when the crash happened, when you reported it, who you spoke with, and what each person asked you to send. This matters when multiple departments are involved.
